Kindergarten – From Sounds to Sentences: The Next Step in Literacy
Reading:
Develop strong reading skills by mastering beginning consonant blends (gl, gr, pl, tr, sl, sn, etc.) and vowel teams (ee, ea, oo, ar, or, ir, ur, etc.). Learners continue building fluency with familiar word families and practice reading simple stories such as Tommy’s Funny Cats, Dancing Friends, and The Fox’s Trick. Emphasis is placed on reading for meaning and identifying key sight words and phrases within short, engaging passages.
Writing:
Learners begin forming simple sentences independently using known word patterns and vocabulary. Writing tasks include spelling consonant blends and vowel teams correctly, copying short reading texts, and composing responses to story-based prompts. Students also write about real or imagined experiences with guidance, using sentence starters and picture cues for support.
Grammar:
Build awareness of sentence structure by practicing with positional words (in front of, behind, between, near, across), pronouns, and coordinating vowel teams (ai, ay, ee, oa). Learners continue to use familiar nouns and verbs while starting to apply inflectional endings like -ed and -ing in oral and written form. Regular review and practice solidify grammar foundations introduced in Pre-K.
Vocabulary:
Expand vocabulary through themed reading passages and phonics-based word lists. New words are introduced within context, using stories and classroom visuals. Learners explore categories such as animals, friendship, places, and actions, while continuing to practice sight word fluency. Vocabulary is revisited through engaging repetition and simple Q&A formats to support long-term retention.
